I am going to be in Colorado in two weeks and want to make my poker time count. What is the best place to play hold 'em in Blackhawk or Central City? My criteria are short (or no) wait times, pleasant service and decent food. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Greetings Angry -
I'll wade in here even though I'm not a regular poker player - so take my comments with a grain of salt. The rooms all are pretty crowded these days so you may end up waiting regardless of where you play - especially on the weekend.
My recommendations would be:
The Gilpin and/or The Lodge as first choice.
Mountain High and Colorado Central Station have smaller venues and don't seem as nice. All four of these are in Black Hawk.
The only place in Central City with poker tables is Fortune Valley. While the setup looks fine, this place is kinda out of the way - you'd have to take the free shuttle bus - so unless you are staying there it may not be worth the effort.
Which brings up "where are you staying?". The Lodge (mentioned above) has cool "Western" rooms but books up quick. Post back if you want more info.
I hope some regular poker players post (more informed) replies for you.

Definitely thanks for your quick reply!
I will be staying with friends in Boulder, so that doesn't enter the equation.
I will strongly consider your recommendations. |

I've played at both Gilpin and Fortune Valley, and poked my nose into Lodge and Mountain High. Weekend nights you might have to wait a bit, but not too long, in my experience. As far as I know, only Gilpin does structured games, 2-4 or 1-2. Every where else, and some Gilpin tables use a 2-5 spread limit game where you can bet or raise 2, 3, 4, or five dollars. If you driving up, and highway 6 is still closed, then I-70 to the central city parkway takes you right to Fortune Valley. Both Fortune Valley and Gilpin have well-done, friendly games.

The Lodge would be my top choice too.

Since this thread started, Golden Gates has opened their poker room on the first floor.
I stuck my head in there last week and it looks very nice, quite classy and walled off from the rest of the casino.
Anybody played there yet?

Does any place other than Gilpin have 1-2 or 2-4 structured games? I know Fortune Valley and Mountain High are both 2-5, which is really 5-5 for all practical purposes.
