November 8, 2005
Riviera Holdings (RIV) tumbled 22% after the casino operator said it had concluded its review of ways to maximize shareholder value. The company said it will continue to consider opportunities as they arise. In addition, the company reported a third-quarter loss of $1.3 million, or 11 cents a share, vs. a loss of $2 million, or 19 cents a share in the same period a year ago. Revenue fell 0.6% to $50.3 million from last year's $50.6 million as a 4.4% decline at its Black Hawk casino , more than offset a 0.9% increase at its Las Vegas casino. |

Hey Gonzo -
It sure is no surprise to me that business at the Riv is down. The improvements at Isle and CCS - as well as on Main Street up in Central City - make playing at the Riv feel like playing "downtown" in Las Vegas instead of the strip.
When Mountain High gets done, the Riv will drop into true slum status.
They better sink some money into it - new machines, decorations, bring back the buffet deals, etc. and brighten the place up! It's depressing!
Just my opinion.

| I was up at the Riv a couple of weeks back, and it was disappointing. There are fewer and fewer machines up in the non-smoking area. This used to be our favorite place, mostly due to the non-smoking area. Even on the main floor, many of the better video poker machines were nowhere to be found. |

| They need an indoor bridge to get there like they do at the CCS. People generally don't want to step outside when they can go to two different casino's without stepping outside. |

You know, a pedestrian bridge is a good idea, but I'm thinking they need to stop low-balling everything in an effort to make a profit (so they can attract a buyer).
In my mind they are a "second tier" property with little hope of going in any direction but down...
