Here's a quiz...
I walk into this casino and I am greeted by an attractive casino host who points me in the direction I need to go. I'm no high roller, either.
This casino is gorgeous, with comfey gas-log fireplaces, very high ceilings (collecting smoke and noise), escalators that work, and plenty (1500 spaces) of indoor parking.
The staff is everywhere. Each cashier station is fully manned. Each bar has multiple bartenders and cocktail staff are plentiful. Everyone is friendly and efficient. They LOVE working there and it shows - I asked them. Not long ago I asked for some help from a security person (I had lost my driver's license) and he was on it in a flash. I had my license back in 3 minutes, I kid you not.
The food is OUTSTANDING. From the buffet to the snack bar to the upscale restaurant - it's all done with quality and value in mind. The bars serve quality refreshments at no cost to players. I'm sick of getting low-balled at nearby casinos - charged for anyting other than the cheapest bar drinks. This doesn't happen, EVER, at this casino.
Finally, the gaming. This is a large casino - all the slots and table games are plentiful. There's always a good crowd here (the reason is obvious). They often have quality entertainment going which adds to the fun. Folks, you can't help but like this place and it's only going to get better.
So - do you know where I am?
No, it's not The Mirage. Not Ceasar's Palace. Not Wynn Las Vegas.
It's Mountain High - Blackhawk.
I've been saying this for a while now - note to the other casinos in BH. You're in trouble.

We hit Mountain High last weekend. Its much better looking now that the center bar's reopened. Still a lot of construction going on, though. The 9/6 Jacks or better uprights seem to be downgraded, but there are a set of slant tops with 9/6 for quarters outside the center bar wall. They've added some multi-strike and "double pay" video poker machines. The double pays machines first pay on the dealt hand, then you play a normal video poker hand. Pays on the deal are roughly the same as the overall payout and are based on the pay table. There's no skill on the deal, its equivalent to a slot. Not great on these machines, 8/5 JOB, but that's about 97.5% payout which is probably as good or better than many slots.
Drink service was slow. No other way to put it. Never did see a waitress when playing VP, and they were even slow in the poker room.
Spent quite a while in the poker room. Nice, but the lighting is weak. Its been relocated to an area that used to be slots, and it doesn't looks like the lighting has changed. They really need to get some lights down onto the tables. The current ones are off to the sides, and create a lot of glare. It was tough to make out the cards sometimes from the far end of the table where I was setting. And, I think craning your neck for a better look is probably a tell. |

Just one blind for $2. For betting, you can either just call, or raise by $2, $3, $4, or $5. Since you really don't want raise $5 for a really good hand, and $2 for a marginally raisable hand, you're stuck with raising by $5.
No, didn't make a suggestion about the lighting. Should have. Other folks noticed, too.
I think they do have a batch of blackjack tables over where the poker area used to be. But, I don't play blackjack, so I didn't look closely.
They don't have the cards tied into the table games. They said they were working on this. Fortune Valley does, and uses the same betting structure. Only other place I've played is Gilpin, which does 1-2 and 2-4 games with a single blind. They also have the so-called 2-5 spread limit. The don't have the players club tied into poker room either. |

| We used to go to this casino a lot for the buffet. It seems like the service at the buffet keeps getting worse. Last time we never even saw our waitress (well we saw her talking to someone else accross the room). The environment for the casino is nice though. It feels like a Colorado casino and I really like the big fireplace in the center of the floor. We will continue to gamble there, but as far as eating goes, we now avoid it. |
